Privacy Policy

Last updated: 14 August 2026. Version: 1.3.

Boh is a language learning app: you talk to an AI tutor out loud, and it talks back. This policy explains what we collect, why, who receives it, and what you can do about it.

Who we are

Boh is operated by Erik Mårtensson (Sweden), the data controller for everything described here. A postal address is available on request via the contact email.

The short version

1. What we collect

Account information

Your name, email address and a user ID, handled by our sign-in provider Clerk. The user ID is how every other record is linked to you.

Conversations

Transcripts of what you say are stored on your device only. Our server receives a transcript once, analyses it within about 24 hours to update your learner profile, and then destroys its copy. Outside the beta described below, we keep no readable record of your conversations, and the operator cannot browse what you said.

Beta testing

Boh is currently in public beta. If you install Boh as a beta tester (through TestFlight), you agree that your conversation transcripts may be kept on our server and read by the operator, for the sole purpose of improving the app — finding bugs, judging whether the tutor pitched your level correctly, and fixing what does not work.

What this means in practice:

When Boh leaves beta and ships on the App Store, this exception ends: transcripts go back to device-only for everyone.

Microphone audio

Processed, never stored. Audio is recorded on your device, sent to our speech provider for transcription, and the temporary file is deleted afterwards. No audio is kept anywhere.

Your learner profile

Derived from your conversations: your languages, self-assessed and estimated level, chosen interests, recurring errors with short example sentences, one-line conversation summaries the tutor uses as memory, and a written review of each session.

Progress

Your position in lessons and flashcards, so it survives a new phone.

Technical data

Per-turn timing measurements (how fast the app responds), per-conversation processing cost, and fair-use metering (how much of your weekly practice allowance you have used).

What we do not collect

No advertising or analytics SDKs, no cross-app tracking, no location, contacts, photos or health data, and no payment information. Nothing here triggers Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt.

2. Why we use it, and the legal basis

Under the GDPR, every use of personal data needs a legal basis. Ours are:

DataPurposeLegal basis
Account informationSign-in, and an account that works across devicesContract (Art. 6(1)(b))
Transcripts, in transitOne-time analysis to update your learner profileContract
Transcripts, stored (beta testers only)Improving the app during the betaConsent, given by joining the beta (Art. 6(1)(a))
Learner profilePitching the tutor at your level, the core of the appContract
ProgressRestoring your place on a new phoneContract
Timing measurementsKeeping the app fastLegitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f))
Fair-use meteringPreventing one account from draining the serviceLegitimate interest
Notes and problem reportsHandling what you report to usLegitimate interest

Providing your name and email is required to create an account; the app cannot work without them. We do not sell personal data and we do not use it for advertising.

3. Who receives it

Boh is built on third-party AI services. They process data on our instructions, under their published data processing agreements.

ProviderReceivesPurpose
ElevenLabsYour microphone audio; the tutor's reply textSpeech to text; the tutor's voice
Google (Gemini)Conversation textGenerating tutor replies

Transfers outside the EU

Some providers process data in the United States. Those transfers rely on the safeguards in their data processing agreements: the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and, where applicable, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

4. Where it is stored

Our database (Supabase) is hosted in the EU. Our server (Render) and several AI providers process data in the United States, covered by the safeguards above.

5. How long we keep it

DataKept for
Transcripts, on your deviceAs long as you keep them
Transcripts, on our server (not a beta tester)At most ~24 hours, destroyed after analysis
Transcripts, on our server (beta testers)Until the beta ends, or until you ask or delete your account
Account, profile, progress, notesUntil you delete your account
Timing measurements90 days, deleted automatically
Fair-use metering12 months, deleted automatically

6. Your rights

Delete everything

Settings, then delete your account. This removes your account, profile, conversation records, notes and your login itself. Immediate, and it cannot be undone.

Get your data

Email contact@speakboh.com from your account's email address for a machine-readable JSON export of everything we hold: account details, learner profile, per-conversation records (dates, reviews, costs), and notes. This is your right to access and to data portability.

The rest of your GDPR rights

You can ask us to correct inaccurate data, to restrict or object to processing based on legitimate interest, and you can complain to your data protection authority. In Sweden that is the Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten (IMY).

7. Automated assessments

Your language level is estimated automatically from your conversations. It exists only to adapt the tutor to you. It is not a qualification, and no decision with legal or similarly significant effects is ever based on it.

8. Children

Boh is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children below that age. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.

9. Security

Connections use HTTPS. Passwords are handled by Clerk and never reach our servers. Database access is limited to the operator. We are honest about the limits: this is a small beta service, not a bank. If you would not want something transcribed, do not say it to the tutor.

10. Changes

If this policy changes, the date above changes with it. If a change materially affects your data, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.
